Back Deck with Roof

June 1, 2022

Between the summers from 2021 and 2022, I replaced the back deck of my house. The old deck was just a bit too small, and it was starting to fall apart. I wanted to add about 50 square feet to better accommodate both seating and a grill, while also allowing for easy traffic flow. Additionally, it was important for us to have a roof so that we could grill rain, snow, or sun.

The deck floats, meaning that it is not attached to the house. While there is some debate about the pro's and con's of attaching a deck to the house, my main purpose was to not have to deal with permits. That said, everything on the deck is code compliant. My son and I dug down 30" and poured very robust footings, and build a very strong substructure. The decking is composite, which was a request of my wife.

Perhaps my favorite feature of the deck (besides the roof) is the natural gas grill. I cannot express how happy I am that I never have to replace a propane tank again. The natural gas cooks so well!
